In line with IFA 2020, Intel presented its new laptop processors at a live event. Under the name Tiger-Lake, the chipsets of the 11th Gen Core generation are said to perform significantly better than the previous Ice-Lake models. With the Renoir Ryzen Mobile 4000 platform introduced at the beginning of 2020, AMD has put its competitor Intel under pressure. Because AMD packs almost twice as many transistors in less space than its predecessor "Ryzen Picasso". This is made possible by an adapted Zen 2 architecture with components as small as 7 nanometers. For example, the processor processes more commands per cycle, so it works more effectively even at a lower cycle rate and thus lower energy consumption.
Now Intel has followed suit with Tiger-Lake and hopes to finally regain the performance upper hand in the notebook segment with its new 11th Gen Core generation. Intel itself describes its new chipsets as the "world's best processor", especially for thin devices and laptops - also speaks of an "evolution platform". The focus is on better manufacturing, faster CPU cores and a fundamentally revised graphics unit called Xe Graphics.
The Tiger Lake CPU contains SuperFin transistors in a 10nm manufacturing process. With the new generation, Intel does not specify a nominal TDP (thermal power loss), but only TDP windows: CPUs with a 0 in front of the G of the type number should consume between 7 and 15 watts, those with 5 in front of the G, on the other hand, between 12 and 28 watts. This also means that there is no longer a guaranteed base clock - because this also depends on the TDP set in each case.
Manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Lenovo, HP, Dell and Co. have more leeway to react with complex cooling systems adapted to the TDP used in order to produce particularly powerful "Ultrabooks".

In another example of what the CPU can do with AI functions, there is a voice call to someone with someone vacuuming in the background. The voice is clearly filtered out, but you can still hear the sucker. Nvidia's noise canceling, however, manages to completely filter out such noises. Intel will have to do a little more here in order to be completely convincing.
With the new processor generation there is also a new graphics architecture: Intel Iris Xe Graphics, which has to compete against AMD's current Renoir-Ryzen in the gaming comparison in the racing game Grid and in Gears Tactics . The Tiger Lake with Xe Graphics delivers almost twice as many FpS (frames per second) than an AMD 4800U laptop. Please note: Gears Tactics is produced by Microsoft, which is partnered with Intel.
At the end of the presentation, Intel points out that non-Intel hardware may not have been optimized for the use case. How powerful Intel's Tiger Lake CPU and integrated Xe graphics unit actually performs will only be shown in our tests.
From Ultrabooks to Project Athena to the Evo platform
Intel expects up to 150 designs from well-known manufacturers such as Asus, Lenovo, Acer, Dell, HP and Co.
The device class of "Ultrabooks" originally goes back to a definition by Intel from 2011. Since then, the specifications have been changed and updated again and again. The term "Ultrabook", which has not been used by Intel for a long time, is replaced by the "Project Athena". In 2019, Intel narrowly defined the basic requirements for laptops in this category. The basis continues to be a powerful and energy-saving Intel processor.
With the Tiger Lake CPU, Intel also presents its current definition with the title "Evo platform" or "Evo notebooks". These should guarantee a minimum battery life of 9 hours, Wi-Fi 6 and Thunderbolt 4. In the trade you will be able to recognize the corresponding notebooks by the new Evo sticker.
