Ra was the ancient Egyptian sun deity. Under the Fifth Dynasty, in the 25th and 24th centuries BC.

Ra was said to travel the sky on the barge, providing light to the world. Each twelfth of its journey formed one of the twelve Egyptian hours of the day, each overseen by a patron deity. Ra then rode the bark through the underworld, each hour of the night is seen as a doorway overseen by twelve other protective deities. Going through all of this while fending off various destructive monsters, Ra reappeared every day on the eastern horizon. Ra's progress on the Mandjet was sometimes conceived of as his daily growth, decline, death and resurrection and it appears in the symbology of Egyptian mortuary texts.
