An Authentication Problem On Azure Affects Microsoft Services

Description of An Authentication Problem On Azure Affects Microsoft Services

An authentication issue with Azure Active Directory is affecting the operation of several Microsoft services for a number of users around the world. A fix is being deployed.
An issue on Azure Active Directory causing authentication issues has affected a subset of Microsoft customers around the world. The incident affected many Microsoft services, including Office, Dynamics, Teams, Xbox Live, and the Azure portal.
User complaints started around 8:15 p.m. yesterday, chronicling their inability to use services that run on top of Azure. At 10:15 p.m., the problem was still not resolved.

New authentication problem

As of this writing, the Azure statukzs page displays the following message: “CURRENT STATUS: Engineering teams have identified a potential underlying issue and are exploring mitigation options. The next update will be provided in 60 minutes or depending on events”.
But with the admin portal also running on Azure, some users on Twitter complained that they couldn't get an update on the outage.
This is not the first time that an authentication problem on Azure Active Directory has caused outages in many Microsoft services. Already at the end of September 2020, Microsoft had experienced multiple Azure AD authentication problems affecting several of its services.

A patch quickly deployed

At around 10:20 p.m., Microsoft appeared to be rolling out a fix. The Azure status page then read that “Engineering teams are currently deploying mitigation measures around the world. Customers should start to see recovery, with full mitigation expected within 60 minutes”.
At 1:30 am, the Azure status page read: “Engineering teams have deployed a fix for Azure AD in all affected regions. Internal telemetry and customer feedback suggest that the error rate for dependent services is declining rapidly. Microsoft services are being restored. Some services may have varying recovery times after the underlying correction. The next update will be provided in 60 minutes or depending on the events”.
This morning, shortly before 8:00 am, the status page displayed the following message: "A deployment is currently underway, in accordance with planned deployment practices, to mitigate the residual impact on Azure Storage." The next update will be provided in 60 minutes or depending on the events”.
